What do you think of Greece in 8th century BC? What normally comes to mind may be Greek gods, ancient structures or maybe even Greek food. There are many more significant aspects that Greece contributed to in this early time period. Many inventions were made such as the currency coin, alarm clocks, the Olympic games, umbrellas, basics of geometry, and many more. Ancient Greek life was of high class for their time; they were a very rich country. They were constantly improving, inventing, and adding new things. They influenced everyone around them and acted as a lead for advancements and inventions.
Project Reflection
I learned the most about cultural aspects of Greece, meaning their customs, food choices, and societal norms. The most significant invention was currency coins which were invented by the Greek. I never knew that money is how it is today because of Greece's masterminds. I also learned about traditions and customs that the Greek live by. I learned about how they treasure religion and family, and that there are many generations of family in each household. Religion is a large portion of Greek life, Easter is the most important holiday to them.
One aspect of ancient Greece that is still portrayed today is their vital family life. Ancient Greek society valued family time and closeness, and nothing has changed to this day. When I think of Greek life, their big, close-knit families. Family relationships are very important and I think its super valuable that Greece values it so much and always will. Something that has been altered from ancient to modern Greece is its language, subtly but surely. Obviously any language will change over time as the country or origin advances and grows. Modern Greek is inherited from ancient Greek so it shows the past of the country while still being up to date and modernized.
My favorite artifact that my group produced was all the food we made. We chose three different dishes that were prominent in Greek society and that were very traditional foods. I made baklava, and my other members made pita bread and tzatziki, kourabiedes. We also made Greek coffee which is brewed very strong and served with no cream or sugar. At exhibition all the visitors seemed to be very attracted to our food, especially since everything was homemade and delicious.
I am very pleased how this project turned out, and I enjoyed all the aspects of it. I wouldn't really change anything if I had the option to. This project had a large impact on my learning, I got to learn not only a ton about Greece, but also the countries that my peers picked. Seeing everyone create their products throughout the whole process gave me a new look on all the countries.

Artist Statement/Interactive Activity
F"or our creative piece we recreated Greece’s Olympic Rings. We chose to recreate the Rings because the rings represent the olympics, and the olympics were originated from Greece. The rings represent “five parts of the world now won over to Olympism and ready to accept its fertile rivalries”. We decided to make our rings the size of our booth, and made from wood. In the makerspace we used a large piece of plywood and used a table saw to create rings, then we painted the rings, and propped them up.
For our interactive activity the foods we chose to recreate for our booth were greek pita bread, kourabiedes, baklava, and greek coffee for the drink. Greek pita bread is a traditional greek staple. It’s great as a side in all meals, and with dips. The recipe we are going to use is from "halfbakedharvest.com". Our next dish we are going to make is kourabiedes cookies. Kourabiedes cookies are greek butter cookies with almonds. The recipe we are going to use to is from "toriavey.com". For our third dish we are making baklava, a sweet pastry dish. It is primarily made from chopped nuts and a honey/syrup. The recipe we are going to use to make the baklava is from "foodnetwork.com". Our last dish which will go with the pita bread is tzatziki sauce. Tzatziki sauce mainly consists of yogurt, cucumbers, olive oil, and lemon. The recipe we are using is from "allrecipes.com". We also decided to have a drink because we thought it would be unique to have at our booth. The drink we will be making is Greek Coffee. Greek Coffee, similar to turkish coffee, is made by using very fine coffee grinds and a briki which is a greek coffee pot. When the Greek Coffee is done the grinds should be at the bottom of the cup, with foam at the top. The recipe we are going to be using is from a youtube video.
