Career Day 2019
For my sophomore year career day I had the opportunity to shadow at Hansen's Surfboards in Encinitas. My family and I have been loyal customers for the longest time, and Hansens has grown so much since the family own business began.
I brought Brianna along with me to shadow for the day, and I really enjoyed doing so with a friend. We were delighted to shadow Sandra Dickerman, the head of retail sales at Hansens. She taught us about spin selling and gave us the inside scoop of the business itself. She also connected us with every other department at Hansens, so we were able to spend 20-30 minutes with each employee at the store to learn all the aspects of it! We first spent a bit of time with Anne who ran the shipping department, where things were slower compared to the showroom. Employees running this section seemed to be more introverted, good with numbers, and quite concentrated. We next spent some time with Paulina who was the head of social media for Hansen's. Her responsibility was running the Instagram platforms, the main Hansen's account and the Womens Hansen's account. She shared with us how they look at post analytics to see the targeted age group, and what time of day will maximize the likes and views of the photos. Then we sat down with Robby, who is in charge of photography and videography for Hansen's. He is the photographer for shooting product for the website, as well as running their Youtube channel. I enjoyed speaking to Robby very much, he also reached out to us for ideas on growing their Youtube which I really loved talking to him about. We spent the day with numerous employees on the floor with different jobs and experiences. At one point when Sandra was showing us Don Hansen's office with photo memories, we got the chance to speak with him, the successful owner. He shared a few words of wisdom, to "always do what you love", which was meaningful and so special coming from Don himself.
At the end of the day, Sandra had us running the fitting rooms giving us the best experience possible. We dealt with a few customers and even made a couple sales too. My time shadowing at Hansens was quite enjoyable and they offered us jobs when we are ready to start working, which is very exciting!
In terms of interviewing Sandra, she answered out questions all day long in nice depth with extra tips and guidance. She told us her background, how she went to school for buying then later realized that sales was where she should be. Her personality was perfect for this job, enthusiastic and positive. Sandra is passionate about putting her customers first, it is the art to this job. She loves going to work daily because of the unique environment and coworkers, everyone gets along and is family.
I am most definitley interested in the fashion portion of this business. I would love to start my own swimwear or clothing line with some of the designs I have already created. I could see myself in a retail sales position in the future as well.
For internship next year I would love to do it with a business owner of a clothing line, so I could learn the start to finish of starting a brand.
