Maestra Creativo

Editorial Creative Masters Project Written by Sienna Dudas Students got to choose a creative master: somebody who is a true master of what they do. This is very open to interpretation, they could choose anyone from an artist, actress/actor, musician, dancer, designer, and so on. Along with choosing a master, students created a physical and digital piece, which were also open for personalization. This could be literally anything, a painting, poem, drawing, poster; anything physical. The digital piece could be a movie, article, photo series; anything digital. Sienna Dudas’s re-expression piece was taken after Cristobal Balenciaga, her chosen master. She decided to follow his fashion designs in her own unique way, by sewing a dress. The dress was simple yet elegant, just as Balenciaga’s “little black dresses.” The dress features a straight neckline, with a bodycon fit. The thick straps are to be tied at whichever length fits. The fabric is a shiny, stretchy nylon to fit comfortably. She thought re-expressing his signature designs in her own style would be the most influential way because fashion is all about the technique and precision. Fashion is an art, and copying one’s design shows unoriginality. On the other hand, taking inspiration from someone’s design is completely fine and recommended. Sienna’s re-expression piece connects to the historical and cultural forces that shaped Balenciaga by his simplistic styles and hard work. He was raised with many siblings and his mother, and began sewing at the young age of 9. He was taken into an apprenticeship to shadow a seamstress, where he perfected many techniques. His work was precise and always worked with his own hands, limiting machine use. Sienna follows the same techniques: constantly working with her hands as much as possible. While working on the dress, she cut the fabric by hand and pinned it in place as well. This project was not a huge challenge for Sienna, as sewing is something she’s quite comfortable with. The creative piece in terms of designing and sewing was easy, but she gained a lot of knowledge of Balenciaga’s life and accomplishments. She grew while learning more about fashion and the design process, and didn’t run into any challenges. The work affected Sienna by teaching her ways to succeed in the fashion industry, as well as good techniques and strategies. She was struck how Balenciaga’s designs were so contradicting; they were on the edge of edgy and classy. His designs reached out of the ordinary and left people in awe. |

Exhibition Reflexion
The most significant moment for me at exhibition was when parents that watched my video enjoyed it or complimented it. Everyone that looked at my project had nothing but kind feedback and smiled while watching my campaign video. People were also impressed when I told them that I had sewn the dress that I was wearing. Most of the responses were “Really? You made that?” which I then responded saying yes I did. One viewer that stood out to me was Teia’s mom. She said how my video was very professional and that I should keep it in my portfolio for the future. This made me very proud, thinking of how my project could be one of the things that boosts me in the future to get a certain job. Also some parents who I talked to were professionals in the areas that I studied: fashion and video editing. One parent that was a video editor said that I used all the proper techniques for my video, such as keeping each clip as short at 2-3 seconds. It was interesting to learn this since I haven’t done much video editing before, and I wasn’t aware of all the techniques and rules that go along with it. I just used my creative eye to make it how I thought looked best, and it was wonderful to be appreciated for my effort.
I have grown in Spanish in terms of learning new vocabulary, and geography. While translating my written pieces, I learned many new words. Now I can make sentences in Spanish, and understand more fluently when it’s being spoken. When I was researching my creative master I learned more about where he was from: Basque, Spain. I learned about the culture he was apart of, and how unique his family and experiences were.
