Murder Mystery - The SS Arcadia
For the Murder Mystery project we formed into groups and chose a time period that stroked an interest in us. We then chose a toxin that we would incorporate into our mystery, a few examples being mercury, chloroform, carbon monoxide, and ours - wood alcohol. Each group collaboratively thought of a mystery relating to both of these things, and each group member created a character. The next step was transforming our story to a play; we rehearsed and then performed to other students. The objective being for the audience to guess what our poison was and who killed who.
New York City in the 1940’s was a buzzing city with rich culture and all kinds of people. The population has skyrocketed to it's amount today, but the city still has it’s nostalgic streets. The prohibition did not affect our characters directly since they were all at a young age during the time period.
Our story is a group of people, some familiar with one another, others not, meet on a cruise ship for a voyage around the coast. Five characters consisting of Anya, Scarlet, James, Victoria, and Jade become friends on their long couple of weeks on the water, but tension arose midway through. Scarlet and James were dating and Scarlet had just found out about her pregnancy, but Jade and James were high school sweethearts. Victoria was the innocent bystander, and Anya was the bartender on the SS Arcadia, so ironically she had everything to do with the murder. The fight broke out when James found out about the pregnancy and didn’t want to deal with the baby, so he communicated with Anya to make a special drink for Scarlet. The drink ended up in the wrong hands of Victoria when her room got set on fire and Scarlet walked by in the midst. The characters later found Victoria dead in her room and realized the drink was laced with wood alcohol.
We struggled a little bit with rehearsing our play, the beginning harder then the rest. We had difficulty putting it all together with what scenes we were going to act out. We did not use a script at all throughout the process, but the closest thing to that was a narrator. I am quite proud of how our story turned out during performances, I feel like we all portrayed our characters perfectly. All of us communicated about our outfits so we made them fit really nicely together. They related to our characters and did not seem out of place. I participated by playing Scarlet in the acting of our story. I feel like all of us participated evenly at exhibition since each character had a pretty similar amount of lines and acting. I learned how you can incorporate so many aspects into writing a story to make it much more interesting such as a poison, murder and a time period. It definitely was more difficult than expected. Performing in a group was a fun experience because I feel like we combined our strengths nicely to curate a wonderful final piece.
