In ‘And Now For Some History’, we researched supreme court cases, in a partnership. Following that, we created art pieces to represent our court case, and wrote our individual thoughts regarding the case.
This project did have a lot of group work, and everyone had a partner. My partner was Cole; I’d say we worked fairly well together. Although there were individual parts such as the court case thoughts, when I was collaborating with my partner we used communication skills greatly. I feel like I mostly came up with the idea for the court case art, so next time I would like to improve by making sure my partner and I use both of our ideas.
In this project the main thing I learned was definitely about my court case, which was Tinker vs. Des Moines. It’s about how a group of students at a high school began a silent protest for peace in the Vietnam war, by wearing black armbands to school. They were told by the school board that this was a violation of dress code rules, even though they didn't seem to break any of the guidelines. This resulted into the parents suing the school for taking away the student's right of expression. I think that oral communication was the most useful learning outcome in this project, since communication was vital to share ideas with your partner. Cole and I didn't have any disagreements; we actually ended up having very similar thoughts about the case.
Personally, I feel that empathy was a class value that went perfectly with ‘And Now For Some History’. Some pairs may have had court cases with outcomes that they didn't agree with, so they had to empathize with why that choice might have been made. Luckily, I ended up agreeing with the decision that was made on behalf of my case. I still empathized with others who disagreed with the court case; in my situation those others may be the school board.
Even though I was not able to attend the mini exhibition for this project, our work still had a final outcome. I am proud of the writing piece that I wrote for ‘My Thoughts’, because i feel like i went into great detail and elaborated on what I feel about the case. To improve, i think we could've done our art piece better. Maybe we could have put it on wood, cardboard, or something better than paper. Overall, I would grade our project an A. We worked hard, completed everything before the deadline, yet our art piece could have been improved a little bit.
