The Dreamlight project revolved around people's dreams for themselves, their future, the community and others around them. Our class interviewed an elementary student, an senior citizen, and a community member, and then created a lantern for each of them. We made the lanterns specific to each individual person, using circuitry.
For the Dreamlight project, I was partnered with Mattia. Almost all the groups had three people, but there were a few groups with only two people; we were one of the pairs. At first I was worried that we would have trouble completing all the portions of this project since we were lacking a partner, but it turned out that we worked great together as just a partnership of two. Mattia and I collaborated extremely well together, as we both worked super hard to make our visions into realities. We communicated about our ideas and the logistics of our work, which really helped. If I could’ve done one thing better as a group member, I think I could have prioritized other ideas besides my own. If I had an idea that I thought was great, I would be adamant about proceeding with that idea, and not consider anyone else's. Overall, my partner and I had great collaboration skills that led us to a wonderful final product.
In Humanities I learned a lot about communication skills, which was mainly from doing the interviews with the senior citizens, community members, and elementary students. I learned how to keep the conversation going even if the interviewee was disengaged, or if there were not enough planned questions ask. In this project Humanities taught me how to infer about people’s emotions, thoughts, and past to create a lantern fixed personally to each interviewee. When interviewing our elementary student, she did not have too much to say, so I had to think deeper about what she did say and make an inference about things she may like for her lantern. Also, I really enjoyed reading Fahrenheit 451 throughout the project. The novel was a super interesting read, and I learned new vocabulary from it.
In the Dreamlight project, I definitely learned the most from physics. At the start of the project, the thought of circuitry confused me and I thought that I would not be able to build a circuit. Later I decided that I was going to give it a try, and I ended up building 1 and a half of the circuitry for our lanterns. I was very proud of myself because I accomplished something that I never thought I’d be capable of. Math also played a somewhat large role in this project, which was the math constructions that each group had to do. These pretty much completed our lanterns because without them the lanterns would not have been as intricate and detailed as they were.
I don’t think Spanish played as big of a role in this project as the other subjects. We only translated our artist statements using google translate, but for the rest of the project Spanish was not used often. It did help though knowing some spanish words that could be used for this project in artist statements or speaking to a spanish speaker in interviews.
In terms of my partnership’s final products, I was very proud of all of our lanterns. We spent so much time adding small details and fixing things whenever they broke, so the final lanterns looked really nice. All of our interviewees seemed very pleased with their lanterns and it felt so good to know that they genuinely enjoyed what we created for them. At exhibition not many people came over to look at my lanterns, since we were off in the bushes a little bit, but when they did, they were very impressed. In terms of work ethic, oral communication, written communication, and content knowledge, I would grade myself an A+. I think that my work ethic was phenomenal throughout the entire project, as I always wanted our work to be the best it could be. When a piece of our motion broke off our senior citizen’s lantern, we did not give up. Instead, we fixed it each and every time, which was quite often. Also, I worked a lot on wrapping the lights around the “DREAMLIGHT” letters for exhibition. I got really frustrated when it wasn’t working, but I kept trying until it worked. My partner and I showed great collaboration skills, and used both of our ideas fairly amongst our work. I communicated by talking about an idea before I followed through with it to make sure my partner would be alright with it. I showed oral communication at exhibition by talking about the process for my lanterns, and about the project as a whole. I feel like I am strong in work ethic because I always strive to make my work the best that it can be and I rarely give up. I demonstrated many class values in this project, but I think that I showed responsibility and grit the most. I was responsible by keeping my workspace organized and completing my work on time. I showed grit by working extremely hard even when things were not turning out as I expected, and always staying positive. Integrity also played a role in this project because there were times when people did not clean up or just left their tools laying on the table even if they were done with them. I cleaned up and put things away when nobody was watching, just because it is the right thing to do.
